The Lines of Torres Vedras is a defensive military system built between 1809 and 1810. The future Duke of Wellington developed this defensive strategy in the framework of the Anglo-Portuguese alliance during the Peninsular wars. It consisted of creating hilltop fortifications to control the access to the Kingdom's capital Lisbon. This three defensive lines transformed the landscape along its 85 km between the Atlantic Ocean and the Tagus River.

The 152 military works, armed with 600 pieces of artillery and defended by 140’000 men became became the most effective defense system and also the cheapest in military history. The Historical Route offers six thematic trails, during which you can discover several forts, visit interpretation centers, follow guided tours and geocaching activities as well as enjoy outdoor activities.
